Kicking the Shamrock Shake

Shamrock ShakeSo this is the time of year I went nuts for McDonald’s shamrock shakes. I love anything mint so these were no brainer for me. Now, I sit and wonder what the hell I was thinking!

While the Shamrock Shake nutrition isn’t posted, looking at the Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry … I’m sure I can guess what it looks like.

Well, to be honest … my first reaction to the nutrition was WHAT THE FUCK!

All nutrition info is for a 12 oz shake (remember 12 oz!!!)

Vanilla – 530
Chocolate – 570
Strawberry – 560

Over 500 calories! That’s nearly 1/3 of what I’m allotted for the day … in a DRINK! Oh my gosh! It only gets worse from here…

Calories from Fat

Vanilla – 150
Chocolate – 160
Strawberry – 160

EEEP that’s certainly not healthy.

Total Fat

Vanilla – 17g
Chocolate – 17g
Strawberry – 18g

It just keeps getting better doesn’t it?

Vanilla – 160
Chocolate – 240
Strawberry – 170

Vanilla – 63g
Chocolate – 76g
Strawberry – 79g

Wow…. just wow. Nothing on that list points to a good option for a shake. Now if you really want a shocker… let’s look at the ingredients…

So it’s a shake so theoretically it should have what… maybe three ingredients? Really only two – Frozen milk and a flavor.

Vanilla reduced fat ice cream, Vanilla shake syrup (isn’t ice cream already vanilla), Whipped Cream and a Maraschino Cherry. This is the same for Chocolate and Strawberry (replacing the shake syrup).

However, if you dig a little further in the ingredient list (notice it wasn’t in the same spot), you’ll see just what’s in that “Shake syrup.”

High fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, water, cocoa (processed with alkali), natural (botanical source) and artificial flavors, caramel color, salt, Potassium sorbate (preservative), artificial flavor (vanillin), red 40

Unless I’m blind, I don’t see any actual FOOD in that list of ingredients… oh wait there’s water! That’s it… water! Nothing else is good for you… it’s awful! The rest of the syrups are just as bad.

Sugar, water, corn syrup, strawberries, high fructose corn syrup, natural (botanical source) and artificial flavor, pectin, citric acid, potassium sorbate (preservative),
caramel color, calcium chloride, red 40.

Corn syrup, water, vanilla extract, caramel color, citric acid, pectin, potassium sorbate (preservative), yellow 5, yellow 6.

Corn syrup, water, vanilla extract, caramel color, citric acid, pectin, potassium sorbate (preservative), yellow 5, yellow 6.

Oh and lets take a look at that Whipped Cream.

Whipped Cream:
Cream, nonfat milk, water, corn syrup, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, mono-and diglycerides, carrageenan, polysorbate 80, beta carotene (color), natural (dairy and
vegetable source) and artificial flavor, mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) to protect flavor. Whipping Propellant (nitrous oxide).

After looking into what I use to run to for comfort last year, I can tell you this girl will NOT be having her traditional shamrock shake. There is no shake on earth worth over 500 calories. It’s simply not worth it!
